The last couple years I’ve been a proponent of using giveaways events to build your list. It’s a marketing strategy that I’ve used and recommended.  The premise here is to offer something of value and if people perusing the giveaway event like the look of your product and your squeeze page, they will opt-in to get said product.

Now, these opt-ins are not necessarily going to stay on your list.  They might opt in for the free gift and opt right out again.  At first you feel rejected by these freebie seekers, but it’s best they get off your list right away or they’ll be the ones calling “spam” on any email you send them in the future.

And it was under that premise that I’ve been participating in giveaways over the years but enough is enough. I don’t mind if they opt-out but it annoys me that instead of clicking the “unsubscribe” link included in every email I send they choose to click on their email providers “spam” button.

The only time I get “spam” warnings from Aweber is right after a giveaway event. I hope you agree that I’m not a “churn and burn” email marketer (meaning that I email sales pitches every day for every crappy product under the sky). I work hard to build a trusted relationship with you and my other subscribers. Of course, I can’t please everyone and unsubscribes are normal but taking the malicious step of hitting the spam button is petty.

Can you tell the day after a giveaway?

I’ve also noticed that the quality of a list built off of giveaways events is not very good. I know that people who join my list for the freebie in the giveaway are probably not targeted customers, but some will be but since I’m not a churn and burn marketer I don’t have a huge list so it’s just not worth it to continue building my list this way.

Another reason for my change of heart is the fact that most giveaway events offer loads of pure utter garbage. You have to go through 52 pages of crap to find a handful of quality products. Fuggedaboutit. I’m done with giveaways.

The Nams4Kids Giveaway is in full swing but you only have until August 27th so no lolly-gagging! Not only do you get some uber cool stuff from top-notch marketers like Kevin Riley, Nicole Dean, Peggy Baron, Bob “The Teacher” Jenkins, yours truly, and others! The goal of this giveaway is to not build our lists but to raise 10K for Dr. Mani’s foundation which saves kids lives by giving them heart surgeries they can’t afford for free!

Done right giveaway events can hundreds of subscribers to your list per event. On April 7th Guido Nussbaum’s Easter JV Giveaway will be launching and it’s a great way of building your list fast.

As of this writing you still have plenty of time to put together your contribution so you can start building your list.

If you don’t have your own report/product to contribute all you need is PLR. But it’s important to rewrite or repurpose it. Giveaways are a fantastic way to easily build your list. You can use your own product or PLR but make sure it’s a quality PLR report. I recommend re-writing it to make it your own. Here is a great course that will walk you through the process of re-writing PLR easily.
