    I can hear again!

    By Alan | January 27, 2008

As I mentioned in this post, I held up Lynn Terry’s podcasting 101 webinar because I couldn’t hear the sound.  Nothing.  Nada.  Zilch.  I hated that feeling of screwing things up for the webinar as I was re-booting and messing around with my PC trying to hear again.  But nothing worked.  Thankfully Roy Montero was able to patch me in via telephone and all was well.

I spent time trouble shooting everything that could go wrong…

  • Made sure speakers were connected, on, and volume was up.
  • Checked device manager to ensure all sound options/sound card is enabled.
  • Checked on control panel to make sure nothing is on mute.
  • Ran the MS help program and all steps were fine.
  • And nothing no sound.  I was thinking of taking it to the Geek Squad at nearby Best Buy.

    Local Best Buy

But the PC is an old Dimension 8200 which I should replace (I do most of my stuff on my MacBookPro) so I didn’t want to spend $150+ to have them look at it.  Plus whatever would they charge to fix it.  So I decided to buy a $35 sound card at Best Buy instead.

I cracked open the PC box and swapped out sound cards and ta-da…I can hear again!  I’ve never been happier to hear that Windows booting up sound when I re-started the computer.  :-)

So this old PC should last me a little longer.  Maybe through the summer. :-)
